Driving to Murree: Road Tips, Timing and Safety

15 October 2026 · 2 min read · By Prime Stays Pakistan

When to leave, how long the drive takes and what to check before the winding climb into the hills, especially in rain, mist or snow.

The drive to Murree is straightforward in good weather and demanding in bad. A little planning keeps it enjoyable.

How long it takes

Murree is about 60 km from Islamabad and Rawalpindi. In normal traffic allow 1.5 to 2 hours. On weekends, holidays and snowfall days it can take much longer, so leave early.

When to leave

Early morning gets you there before the traffic and the afternoon mist. Try to arrive in daylight, especially on the last winding stretch to your apartment.

Before you go

  • Fill the tank and check the tyres, brakes and wipers.
  • Check the weather and any road or snowfall advice for the day.
  • Save the host's contact number and the address pin.
  • Carry water, snacks, a charger and a warm layer.

In mist, rain or snow

Drive slowly, keep a long gap to the car ahead and use low gear on the descents. Do not stop on bends. In snow, carry chains if your vehicle needs them and turn back if conditions look unsafe. A night in Rawalpindi first is a sensible fallback.

Parking

Most guest houses and apartments include parking, but it is worth confirming on busy winter weekends.
