Islamabad in 3 Days: Faisal Mosque, Margalla Hills and Saidpur Village
A relaxed three-day plan for the capital: Faisal Mosque at golden hour, a Margalla trail, Daman-e-Koh, Saidpur Village and Rawal Lake.
Islamabad rewards a slower pace. The roads are wide, the sectors are easy to read on a map and the hills are always in view. Here is a three-day plan that keeps the driving short.
Day 1: Faisal Mosque and the city
Begin in the afternoon at Faisal Mosque, one of the largest mosques in South Asia, with its four tall minarets set against the Margalla Hills. Late light is the most beautiful. Dress modestly and expect to remove your shoes. Continue to the Pakistan Monument for the city view and finish with dinner in F-6 or F-7, where cafes and restaurants sit close together.
Day 2: Margalla Hills
Start early on one of the Margalla trails. Trail 3 and Trail 5 are the most popular and suit most fitness levels. Afterwards drive up to Daman-e-Koh for the view over the whole city, then lunch at Pir Sohawa with the valley below. Keep the evening free.
Day 3: Saidpur, Lok Virsa and Rawal Lake
Spend the morning in Saidpur Village, a restored old village with stone lanes, craft shops and cafes. The Lok Virsa museum is a short ride away and gives a good introduction to Pakistani heritage and crafts. End the trip with a sunset walk beside Rawal Lake.
Where to stay
A furnished apartment in F-6, F-7 or F-10 puts the cafes and the trailheads within a few minutes. For a longer visit, look at E-11 or Bahria Enclave for more space and better value.
